Meiji Shunga

During the Meiji period (1868-1912) when the ports to the West were opened the art of shunga was heavily influenced by the European art. It became more realistic in its portrayal of the human bodies and its settings. Artists like Ikeda Terukata and Tomioka Eisen were the most prominent artists working in shunga but the true master and last innovator of the genre was Kawanabe Kyosai.
