Masterful Depiction Of Lustful Orgies Through History By Blas Gallego
One of the most popular erotic works by the Spanish illustrator Blas Gallego (1941) is the series of illustrations entitled "Historical Orgies (aka. Orgies Through History)" which a Spanish editor commissioned him for the inside of a monthly Penthouse-type magazine. Initially, he had to draw 12 large-sized illustrations of orgies from prehistory to the future but when he made six of them, he reached an agreement with him to suspend the commission because he was tired of drawing so many “boobs and asses” and so many people in an orgy. Gallego would later regret it because the series was very successful in several countries like Japan. Calendars were even made. He also already had good ideas for the other six illustrations; the Musketeers, the French Revolution, the discovery of America, and the last one was on the future.
Self-Censorship
Interestingly, the illustrator censored himself because the editor wanted more and more explicit things. He didn't like it, so he deliberately kept things hidden. Even in the originals he covered certain things to sell the posters. The "Orgies" were sold all over the world and he still makes a living from them, he said in an interview with a Spanish website in 2012.
