Récits de la Villa Brigitte: The Bibliographical Mysteries Of a Clandestine Publication And Its Erotic Illustrations

A Clandestine Edition and Its Bibliographical Mysteries

While researching erotic literature recently, I came across a case that caught my attention. On a blog devoted to rare-book collecting, I found a collector's account of a clandestine publication attributed to the French publisher Jean Fort, whose publishing history raises a number of unresolved questions. The book is Récits de la Villa Brigitte: Fessées gaillardes et authentiques racontées par les membres du Club Sainte Brigitte (Tales of Villa Brigitte: Vigorous and Authentic Spankings Recounted by Members of the Saint Brigitte Club), published in Paris by the Bibliothèque des Deux Hémisphères as part of the Collection Cressida, with no date given.

The account appeared on January 22, 2020, on the Paris Olympia Press blog, run by a collector identified as Steve M. According to him, the edition presented a bibliographical mystery, since he had been unable to locate other copies in libraries, auction records, or sources that might help reconstruct its history. The book's rarity was heightened by the presence of sixteen color illustrations, whose origin was also unknown. The collector suggested that these images might not have formed part of the original publication but could have been commissioned by the copy's first owner. The lack of information about the set, together with the difficulty of locating other illustrated copies, left its relationship to the publishing project uncertain.

The edition described consists of two volumes, preserved in their original paper wrappers, with titles printed on their spines. The books measure approximately 19 × 12 centimeters. According to the collector, the first volume has 139 pages, while the second has 155 pages and a table of contents. The title page identifies the Collection Cressida and the publishing address Bibliothèque des Deux Hémisphères, Paris, without mentioning Jean Fort. The attribution to this publisher derives from later bibliographical records. At the bottom of the title page, a penciled note gives the year 1911, although nothing establishes when or by whom that date was added. The inscription is therefore a clue to the book's dating, not proof of its publication year.

The title attributes the stories to members of a supposed Saint Brigitte Club, a device suggesting a collection of experiences narrated by different participants. The opening page of one story, entitled Récit de M. A., attaché d'ambassade (Account of Mr. A., Embassy Attaché), reinforces this structure. The narrator addresses ladies and gentlemen gathered to hear his story and presents the episode as a personal experience that took place after his return to Paris. The text is organized to lend authenticity to the events narrated, turning fiction into a succession of testimonies. The same device appears in the subtitle, which describes the accounts as authentic. This claim to truth should not, however, be mistaken for documentary evidence: it is part of the literary construction of an erotic narrative presented as lived experience.

The Illustrations and the Spanking Novel

The sixteen color illustrations are the most intriguing feature of this copy. Inserted between the pages and unsigned, they depict erotic scenes that, according to the collector, go beyond the themes of flagellation usually found in this type of literature. Looking at the images, however, I find that almost all of them portray beatings, especially spanking of the buttocks. This recurrence places the book close to a genre of erotic literature known as the spanking novel, which circulated from the late nineteenth century into the early decades of the twentieth. In these narratives, corporal punishment ceases to function solely as a disciplinary instrument and becomes part of situations involving desire, submission, authority, and transgression. Punishment, often presented as an educational or corrective practice, becomes an erotic motif, establishing a relationship between social discipline and its fictional representation.

The association between punishment and eroticism is one of the genre's central elements. Its narratives frequently depict situations in which authority is exercised by teachers, governesses, relatives, employers, or other figures in positions of power. Reversals of these relationships are also common, however, with subordinate figures assuming authority over those who would normally occupy higher positions. The erotic interest of these stories lies not only in the act of punishment but also in the transformation of social relationships into situations of domination and submission. The body thus becomes the site on which these relationships are represented, while exposed buttocks and the positions adopted by the characters constitute conventions recognizable to readers of the genre.
