The Sensual Adventures of the Thunder God Raijin And a Corpulent Bathing Lady

The thunder god Raijin is one of the most influential mythological figures in Japanese culture. He is also among the eldest gods within Japan’s most dominant religion Shinto, and descendant of Izanagi and Izanami, the deities who gave birth to the many islands of Japan.

Raijin and Fujin

Together with his brother Fujin (god of the wind) he is seen as the cause of all the bad weather that constantly hits Japan. The Japanese have a lot of respect for stormy weather and therefore you can find many scary statues of Raijin all over Japan.

Raped By Oni

I have done some research to examine the relation between the two protagonists (Raijin and the bathing lady) featured in the humorous paintings below since they are portrayed together in at least two separate shunga pieces, but haven’t found any mythological reference in the form of a story. The only info I came across is that in the Edo period, people believed that when a woman was taking a bath during a thunder storm she would be raped by the demon (oni) Raijin.

Orgasmic

The paintings from the album below (c.1940s) are in a “loose style” reminiscent of Kawanabe Kyosai and some of his contemporaries. It features a rather extensive visual story of their various meetings ending with an orgasmic finale…

In a previous post (August 2017) we already paid attention to this striking encounter between Raijin and a bathing lady.
