Alexey Linkov: Beauty, Myth and the Dreamlike Figure

The erotic paintings of the contemporary Ukrainian-born Canadian painter Alexey Linkov are a whimsical blend of the traditional academic painting, the imaginative freedom of fantasy, symbolism and surrealism. Linkov describes himself as being dedicated to preserving the achievements and values of the Classical arts but also making it contemporary for the modern audience to enjoy and connect with. In most of his erotic paintings the female figure becomes the central motif through which Linkov explores beauty, nature, mythology, sensuality and psychological mystery. Linkov’s work is recognisably contemporary, yet it deliberately resists many of the assumptions of contemporary art by returning to the painted body, carefully constructed composition and the visual language of myth. Linkov himself describes his practice as Neoclassical, influenced by Impressionism, Orientalism, psychedelic and fantasy art, as well as Pop art.

Physical Refinement

What makes Linkov’s paintings particularly interesting is the tension between idealisation and individuality. Linkov paints figures that possess the physical refinement associated with classical art, and still they are not presented as remote, marble-like gods. They have softness, vulnerability and psychological presence. His women appear caught in private moments: dreaming, resting, contemplating or simply existing within an intensely atmospheric landscape. The result is an art that is simultaneously classical and intimate.

Blue Seascape

Painting seen in Fig.1., titled evocatively ‘In Sappho’s Dreamscape’, Linkov places the female figure against an almost overwhelmingly blue seascape. The painting is explicitly conceived as a surreal tribute to the Greek poet Sappho and is dated 2006. The title alone brings us back to mythological spheres but also this is mythology seen through a veil of dreams, romanticised and consciously so. This whimsical mix is particularly useful for understanding Linkov's wider style. The strongest element is the relationship between figure and environment. The woman occupies the foreground, but the ocean and sky seem to extend her psychological state. The blues are not merely descriptive colours: they establish a dreamlike emotional atmosphere. The turquoise water, the pale clouds and the yellow-green passages of light create a heightened natural world that feels more imagined than observed. Against this setting, her golden hair becomes almost symbolic, linking the figure visually to sunlight and the warm earth beneath her. The pose is also significant.

Tilted Head

Rather than presenting the nude body as an assertive classical ideal, Linkov gives it a relaxed, introspective posture. The tilted head and direct gaze create a curious psychological ambiguity. She seems simultaneously accessible and distant, as though the viewer has interrupted a moment of thought. This is appropriate for a painting about Sappho and poetic imagination: the body becomes a doorway into an interior world. Linkov's brushwork is particularly noticeable in the landscape. The sky and sea contain visible, energetic strokes, whereas the body is rendered with considerably smoother modelling. This contrast creates a dialogue between Impressionist atmosphere and academic figure painting. Nature is allowed to remain painterly and unstable while the figure is given greater anatomical and tonal definition. The sea, or a source of water such as river or lake, appear often in Linkov’s art, as seen in Fig.5., Fig.6., Fig.7. and some other.
