A Rare Set of 15 German Erotic Engravings From Around 1840
The following set of fifteen erotic engravings with the images displayed in an oval-shaped frame. It is dated circa 1840 and attributed to the German artist Wilhelm von Kaulbach (October 15, 1805 Bad Arlsen, Waldeck – April 7, 1874). He is known for his murals and his work as a book illustrator and associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting.
Steamy Images
The piquant scenes in Kaulbach’s engravings below take place in colorful settings with often ironic references to authorities and clergy in particular. Nice to see that artists like this took the liberty of mocking the authority so early in the 19th century. It’s also interesting to compare these steamy images with the shunga of the same era. Especially when we look at the size of the genitals.
Pussy-licking Dog
Striking in these engravings are the amusing details the artist includes, such as the Hail Mairys of the apologetic monk in Figure 1, the pussy-licking dog (Fig.14), the jaguar carpet* (Fig.7) or the comical erotic painting hanging on the wall in Figure 10.

Hail Marys
This first engraving takes us to an extensive sex orgy between soldiers and nuns. Funny is the tonsure-bearing monk on the left who is taken across the table from behind by one of the soldiers, while he recites Hail Marys.

Birch Rod
A teacher has taken aside a naughty adolescent schoolgirl and lashes her naked butt with a birch rod. The latter seems to enjoy it, as do the young students in the classroom in the background who are drawing male genitals on the blackboard.

Unchaste Gathering
Again a satirical nod to the ecclesiastical ministry here with the unchaste gathering of monks and nuns.

Cunnilingus
A foursome with the male performing cunnilingus on a girl standing on the chair while preparing for penetration with another. The plump woman on the couch approaches him from behind, caressing his scrotum.

A mustachioed man has to use all his limbs to satisfy no less than six nymphomans.

Blindman’s Bluff
A group of people involved in some kind of erotic variation on blindman’s bluff.

Mammary Intercourse
A couple has withdrawn from the expanded orgy in the other room. The man is performing mammary intercourse with the female lover squeezing her breasts, while the woman is sitting on a pile of pillows with a jaguar carpet at the foot.

Forest
A man is having fun with three voluptuous women in the forest.

In a Lake
Three passionate couples in a lake. The couple in the center of the composition uses a rock as an aid during their intimate activities. The man with the sideburns in the background has lifted the fat woman’s dress and is preparing to penetrate her from behind.

Bust With Erection
Two drunk female attendants of a masked ball lie on the sofa, totally exhausted. The painting in the background shows a spicy image of a copulating couple in front of a stone bust with an erection.

Sideburns
Three men with sideburns have an erotic rendezvous with three women. Funny thing is that the smallest of the three men has fun with two women at the same time.

Bacchanal
The gathering of this quartet has turned out to be an intimate affair.

Revelers
In a party hall, driven by the music of the orchestra in the background, dancing revelers go absolutely crazy.

Lesbian Menage a Cinco
A lesbian menage a cinco with the around participants forming a circle. The crowd-pleaser is the King Charles Spaniel putting his nose where it doesn’t belong.
Fig.15.
Corniness
Two aroused couples in the foreplay stage in the park near a statue. The bearded man lying in the grass eats the woman while she clumsily raises the glass. In her corniness, she has put on the man’s feathered hat.
*I know, I’m an animal lover myself but if you move to the early 19th century for a moment (a time with a different moral), the exasperated expression of the skinned animal in this setting has something funny about it.
