The Importance Of the Ova

The emergence of the OVA (original video animation) in Japan in the 1980s not only changed the way anime was produced, by allowing small animation studios to enter the market, but also enabled adult themes to be developed for an audience not composed of children. With approaches focused on science fiction, horror, and romance, it was inevitable that the OVA would also include sex, almost always related to violence or the supernatural. Over time, the predominance of sex scenes over the plot led many OVAs in the West to be labeled as hentai, a generic term for animations and comics with explicit erotic content, unlike in Japan, where expressions like "ero manga" and "ero anime" are more common to refer to this type of production. However, there are OVAs in which the presence of explicit sex may not be enough to classify them as hentai, as it can be subordinate to the narrative, functioning as an expressive device that intensifies psychological, dramatic, or aesthetic aspects of the work. In these cases, the sexual content is not presented merely gratuitously or with the sole purpose of arousing, but as a narrative element that reveals characters' motivations or conflicts, or even as a strategy to provoke discomfort and tension in the viewer.

Ambiguous Zone

Furthermore, the frequency and centrality of erotic scenes in these OVAs vary considerably; they may occupy a secondary space in relation to the main plot or even manifest as a kind of visual device for more complex themes, which may involve violence and abuse. Thus, these works navigate an ambiguous zone, challenging rigid classifications between pornography and fiction, and suggest that eroticism in anime can perform multiple functions that go beyond mere sexual appeal and are embedded in broader narrative and aesthetic contexts.

Inseparable Sex Scenes

A paradigmatic example of this ambiguity can be observed in works like Kite (1998) and Mezzo Forte (2000), directed by Yasuomi Umetsu (梅津 泰臣), in which sex scenes are inseparable from character development and narrative atmosphere, but do not exclusively define their identity as cultural products. The career of Yasuomi Umetsu, born in 1960, has established him as one of the most controversial and artistically sophisticated directors of Japanese animation aimed at adult audiences, becoming known precisely for the unique way he articulates eroticism, violence, and character design—an aspect also evident in Kite Liberator (2008) and the other anime he directed.
