Jacques Touchet (Paris, 17 September 1887 – 23 November 1949) was a prolific French book illustrator whose career spanned nearly four decades, producing over 65 illustrated books.

Beauty of Roses

Born into a family with deep ties to French culture, he was the youngest son of Désirée Gravereaux and François Touchet. His great-uncle, the renowned rose-grower Jules Gravereaux, played a significant role in his life, inviting him to family gatherings at the famous Haÿ des Roses. This exposure to the beauty of roses profoundly influenced Touchet, leading him to create several oil paintings and watercolors inspired by their vibrant colors.

Prisoner of War

A student of the illustrator Paul Renouard and caricaturist Louis Morin, Touchet began his career contributing to magazines and creating advertising drawings. His experiences during World War I, particularly his time in the Army of the East and later as a prisoner of war in Germany, deeply marked his early work. His first published album, Les petits métiers de Salonique (1916), and his subsequent work, Croquis d'un prisonnier de guerre (1918), drew from these wartime experiences, showcasing his ability to capture the human condition through illustration.

Artistic Excellence

Throughout his career, Touchet worked with major publishing houses such as René Kieffer, Briffaut, and Éditions de le Belle Étoile, among others. His daughter, Line Touchet, followed in his footsteps, becoming a book illustrator herself, continuing the family tradition of artistic excellence.

The Memoirs of Casanova

The Memoirs of J. Casanova de Seingalt, written by Giacomo Casanova between 1789 and 1798, are a captivating account of the Venetian adventurer’s life. Initially published posthumously around 1825 in a censored version, these memoirs reveal Casanova’s daring exploits across Europe, where he lived variously as an abbot, soldier, historian, magician, and more.

Libertine Lifestyle

Known for his libertine lifestyle, Casanova's adventures are infused with wit, charm, and a deep love of pleasure. The original manuscript, acquired by the National Library of France in 2010 for 7 million euros, was finally published in its uncensored form between 1960 and 1962 under the title Histoire de ma vie. Casanova's memoirs offer an unfiltered glimpse into the life of a man whose name has become synonymous with seduction and adventure, immortalizing him in history not just as a lover, but as a complex figure of wit and intellect.

Portly Prostitute

Below we've included a selection of the most erotically charged illustrations Touchet produced for Mémoires de Casanova (Casanova Memoires)’, that was issued in 1950. Humour can be found in the voyeur behind the curtain to whom Casanova shows his naked 'conquest' (Fig.2), a bacchanal in an underground pub in which a portly prostitute looks worriedly at a drunken colleague who has just put a large jug of wine to her mouth (Fig. 9), or the two maids in a cellar amusing themselves with a monk on a chair showing what he has under his habit (Fig.10).
