During the nineteenth century the smaller koban-sized prints and also hanshibon (book) size ‘toy’ prints (shikake-e) containing flaps and doors that could be opened to reveal explicit sensuality were very popular in Japan.
Move the Genitalia
These kind of ‘pop-up porn’ illustrations at first show a rather innocent scene of a couple under a blanket or behind a sliding door for instance but in a following view when the cover has been lifted it reveals an explicit intimate act or the sexual organs of the protagonists. In some cases (mainly the koban-sized prints) it’s also possible to move the genitalia of the male or female protagonist with a separate cord.
Distinguishing Private Parts
In the charming set below (attributed to Koikawa Shozan and issued around 1860), the prints display various geisha exposing their distinguishing private parts that are described in detail on the backside. The accompanying male figurine with an erected member can be inserted in the slits in the paper.
