Later this week we’ll be adding some new shunga pieces including a long fold-out piece. This scene is divided over 8 pages and features a group orgy involving seven couples of aristocratic heritage. A lot of attention has been given to the various hair-styles, diadems and headdresses. The design is attributed to Koikawa Shozan (1831-1907).
Princess Cut
The above female has a Hime cut (Hime katto) hairstyle, also called ‘the princess cut’ that was fashionable among the women at the imperial court.
Eboshi
The male wetting his fingers is wearing an eboshi. Initially a headdress worn to indicate a man who was just beyond his adolescence, but often worn by Shinto priests (shinshoku) during ritual ceremonies.
First Flower
The female on the right sporting the gigantic hair ornaments (front comb with hair-pins) is an oiran, the geisha with the highest status. They were also called ‘first flower’ a poetic reference to their exalted status within society at the time.
Chonmage
The young nobleman on the above left has covered the top of his head with a blue brimless cap and has his hair in the traditional chonmage-style.
Kariginu Sugata
The male on the above left wears a head-dress named Kariginu sugata, which indicates that he is a nobleman. The woman on the right sports a male hat called tate-eboshi.
