Background
Philip Henderson was born on November 2, 1967 in Atlanta, Georgia. His upbringing took place in Adelphi, Maryland. Henderson grew up in a literary atmosphere. His father, Stephen Henderson, wrote the book Understanding the New Black Poetry in 1973.

World Traveler
Henderson spent seven years as a student at Howard University in Washington. Rather than remaining full time in school, he traveled around the world as a way of furthering his education. This journey included Northern Europe, North Africa, and the Mediterranean. Henderson settled in Cairo, Egypt, for a year.

Books
After coming back to the United States, Henderson worked as an editor for a literary magazine and completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1992. After that, he joined forces with Fiction Collective Two (FC2), a small publisher, and circulated his first book, Life of Death. Henderson published sparingly in small journals for ten years. Henderson’s second novel, Nate, won the American book award in 2006.
