This is one of the panels, consisting of four, from a luxurious scroll with fine details and coloration and printed with gold and silver pigments. It's from a series entitled 'Renri no eda hiyoku no maki (Scrolls of Inseparable Lovers)' issued c. October 1867 and created by the great Meiji master Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-1889).

Strange Imagery

The jumbled imagery creates a rather bizarre atmosphere: in the foreground, orgiastic scenes of men  in western-style clothing and women in both Japanese and western-style dress; and in the background, European-style sculptures and strange imagery such as a European woman giving birth to a baby from her golden vagina.

Strike Poses

The statues in the background have their legs spread wide to display their erect penises. At the right end of the picture, two children emerge from the western woman's golden vagina and strike poses like kabuki actors.
