The Penis Worship During the Onda Matsuri Festival

The penis worship in Japan has a long tradition that goes back centuries. Every year during the early months, the so-called penis (fertility) festivals are held all over Japan. One of the oldest festivals is called Onda Matsuri (Rice Field Festival) and celebrates and prays for fertility of the planted rice.

Long-nosed Goblin

The festival includes a ceremony that starts off with the offering of Shinto prayers for the rice planting. Then a performance follows with a whimsical coupling between a tengu (long-nosed goblin) and a bashful, chubby human woman. They are accompanied by an older man who encourages them in their love-making (below you can find a video including the complete performance).

There’s also a vagina festival (smaller scale) which is called the Ososo Matsuri.

Below you can find some items related to the Onda Matsuri festival and penis worshipping in Japan..

Three excited males are standing near the shore (Fig.5.). They are busy with a telescope and spy on a copulating couple in a pleasure boat. They are festivalgoers on their way to Onda Matsuri (Rice Field Festival), a fertility festival, which features public ritual sex. The male wearing the long-nosed Tengu goblin is an actor who is going to perform at the festival (Fig.6.). Further down the road two travelling musicians are observing a male who is juggling a geisha cushion (taka-makura) with his erected penis.
